The Cemetery’s Dead Tree

The Dead Tree

A dead tree, once evergreen, stands alone in the valley’s graveyard. The steeple of the abandoned Baptist church shrinks behind the trim’d-turf hill. For when the tree died and after ‘twas painted, the cemetery managers, with shame and reluctance, decided to cut it down.

Painted in February 2021.

12 by 18 inches. oil on linen canvas.
